Background
The increasing reliance on digital technologies, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) systems has transformed data into one of the most valuable organizational assets. Effective data governance ensures that data are managed responsibly, securely, ethically, and strategically. Simultaneously, business sustainability has become a critical priority for organizations seeking long-term economic, social, and environmental performance. The intersection of data governance and sustainability is increasingly recognized as essential for organizational resilience, regulatory compliance, stakeholder trust, and competitive advantage.
Objective
This study examines the relationship between data governance and business sustainability, explores governance frameworks that support sustainable business practices, identifies implementation challenges, and proposes strategic recommendations for organizations operating in data-driven environments.
Methods
A narrative review and conceptual analysis were conducted using peer-reviewed journals, industry reports, sustainability frameworks, data governance studies, and digital transformation literature published between 2018 and 2025. Relevant themes were synthesized to develop a comprehensive understanding of governance-driven sustainability.
Results
The findings indicate that effective data governance enhances sustainability by improving decision-making, risk management, transparency, regulatory compliance, stakeholder trust, and resource efficiency. Organizations with mature governance frameworks demonstrate stronger sustainability performance and long-term resilience. However, challenges related to data quality, cybersecurity, governance complexity, and regulatory uncertainty remain significant barriers.
Conclusion
Data governance has evolved from a technical function into a strategic capability that supports sustainable business development. Organizations that integrate governance principles into sustainability strategies are better positioned to achieve long-term success in increasingly digital and regulated business environments.
