Abstract

Automation has become a cornerstone of modern operations management, enabling organizations to improve efficiency, reduce costs, enhance quality, and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Advances in technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and Industrial Automation have transformed traditional operational processes across manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, retail, and service industries. This study explores the role of automation in operations management, highlighting its applications, benefits, challenges, and future prospects. Using a conceptual research methodology based on secondary data from academic literature, industry reports, and organizational case studies, the research demonstrates that automation significantly enhances productivity, operational accuracy, decision-making, and customer satisfaction. However, implementation challenges including high investment costs, workforce displacement concerns, cybersecurity risks, and technological integration issues remain critical barriers. The study concludes that organizations adopting automation strategically can achieve greater operational excellence and long-term business sustainability.
